‘Key part’: Dragons extend Suli; Dolphins snaps up young Tiger: NRL Transfer Centre

The Dragons have confirmed the extension of Moses Suli, re-signing the exciting centre for an additional three years.

The new contract will see Suli stay put at the club until at least the end of the 2027 season, having first joined the Dragons ahead of their 2022 campaign.

“We’re glad to be able to secure Moses for a further three seasons,” said Dragons head coach Shane Flanagan.

“He’s a powerful, mobile centre whose best football is still in front of him and he will be a key part of our backline over the coming years.”

DOLPHINS SNAP UP TIGERS YOUNG GUN

Elsewhere, Tigers winger Junior Tupou has signed a three-year deal to join the Dolphins from the 2025 season and beyond.

The 21-year-old has played 26 first grade games to date, having also made his Test debut for Tonga in the three-game series against England after the 2023 NRL season.

Tupou joins this season’s outside back recruits Herbie Farnworth and Jake Averillo in making the move to Redcliffe to feature for the NRL’s newest franchise.

“The signing of Junior adds even more depth to our squad as we look ahead to establishing ourselves as a strong club of the future,” Dolphins chief executive Terry Reader said.

“He is one of the most exciting young backs in the NRL at the moment so we will be excited to have him join our evolving roster.

“Junior is a powerful runner out of the back of the field so he will give us plenty of punch.

“At his age he also has plenty of room and time to improve his game, so we see him as a really valuable addition to the long-term future of the club.”

Tupou also had interest from the Raiders and Roosters, whilst the Tigers were also keen to retain his services beyond 2024.

DEARDEN’S COWBOYS FUTURE CONFIRMED

Another playmaker has come off the board with classy Cowboys five-eighth Tom Dearden signing a massive five-year extension which will see him remain in North Queensland until at least the end of the 2029 season.

The 22-year-old has gone from strength to strength since arriving in Townsville from the Broncos midway through the 2021 season.

Dearden starred during the Cowboys run to a preliminary final in 2022 and was one of the more consistent players during the club’s underwhelming season in 2023.

Since his time in North Queensland, Dearden has represented Queensland and has forged a formidable attacking partnership with Cowboys fullback Scott Drinkwater.

Cowboys General Manager of Football, Michael Luck, says it’s a “great day for the club”.

“Today’s announcement finalises what we believe is a solid foundation for our club to build around with Tom, Scott Drinkwater and Reece Robson all locked into long-term deals,” Luck said in a club-issued statement.

“We were always confident Tom wanted to remain part of our club because he has thrived in our environment. His improvement as a player has been considerable since he first arrived in 2021 and we believe he’s only scratched the surface.

“We are thrilled to extend Tom’s contract to the end of 2029 and look forward to the success we believe is in front of us with Tom playing an integral role.”

Following Jarome Luai’s reported agreement to join the Tigers on a five-year deal, Dearden is the second star playmaker to shore up their future in just a handful of days.

Broncos half Adam Reynolds is off contract at the end of 2024, but it’s expected he’ll either retire or sign a short-term deal to stay in Brisbane.

Other playmakers without a contract from 2025 include Warriors five-eighth Luke Metcalf, Knights’ Tyson Gamble and Dolphins’ Kodi Nikorima

Dearden’s re-signing is a blow for Shane Flanagan and the Dragons, who were reported to be keen on tempting the tenacious playmaker away from Townsville.
