Sayonara? Eddie Jones quits after disastrous second stint as Wallabies coach

Eddie Jones’ disastrous second stint as Wallabies coach has come to an end.

With just two Test wins in charge and a worst-ever World Cup performance Jones and Rugby Australia have reached an agreement for him to quit, according to multiple reports.

He was signed on a five-year deal earlier this year following the sacking of Dave Rennie.

It was widely reported Jones had interviewed with Japan over their national job before the World Cup, which he attempted to deny.

“There’s no named source for these stories, so there’s no credibility about the story to start with,” Jones said last week to the SMH.

“Secondly, the president of Japan Rugby happens to be a very close associate of mine. Every time I go to Japan, I have coffee with him. We talk about rugby. Have I met Japanese representatives? Yes. But I have done that for 30 years.”

Jones spoke to News Corp on Sunday and, in a lengthy interview, declared his frustration was over how his actions were being interpreted.

“The only thing I’m disappointed about is the media was trying to portray me as not being committed to Australian rugby,” he said.

“The last thing anyone could criticise me about is commitment. Anyone that really knows me, knows I’ve been committed to it. I’ve given it a go.”

“It’s the old equation that if you want success you’ve got to have to get the timing right and you’ve got to have an opportunity to do it. Now I’ve got the timing wrong, because we’re not ready for the change yet.

“But hopefully maybe what I can be is a catalyst for change and people will start to see, we really need to get onto this now (changing Australian rugby’s high performance system).”

Jones will reportedly not receive a payout despite being contracted until after the 2027 World Cup, to be held in Australia.
