Raiders poach Panthers forward after immediate release; Bulldogs lock up prodigy: Transfer Centre

The Raiders have poached the services of versatile back-rower Zac Hosking on a three-year deal with the Penrith Panthers granting him an immediate release.

“The Canberra Raiders can confirm the signing of Penrith Panthers backrower Zac Hosking on a three-year deal effective immediately,” the Raiders said in a statement.

Hosking will join the Raiders until the end of the 2026 season, after playing 25 NRL games for both Brisbane and Penrith.

Hosking appeared in 21 matches in 2023, playing a pivotal role in Penrith’s premiership winning season.

The 26-year-old will bring vital experience and depth to the Raiders squad, having played in both the second row and centres.

Raiders NRL Recruitment Manager Joel Carbone said Hosking would be a great addition to the squad and is excited to see him join the club for the remainder of the pre-season.

“The Canberra Raiders are incredibly excited to announce the signing of Zac Hosking. In the brief time we’ve known Zac, and through watching him play in the NRL over the last few seasons, it’s evident that his work ethic, ability, and character will be great additions to our Club,” Carbone said.

“He also adds some versatility to our squad having played several positions in his career and we’re delighted to have him on board.”

“We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Penrith Panthers for their professionalism and transparency throughout this process.”

The Panthers thanked Hosking for his services in a media release of their own.

“Penrith Panthers has granted Zac Hosking an immediate release from the club to pursue an opportunity at another NRL club for the 2024 season,” the club said in a statement.

Hosking joined the Panthers at the start of the 2023 season and went on to play 21 NRL games in the premiership-winning season.

“After coming to the Panthers and being an integral member of the 2023 squad, we always knew keeping Zac at the club beyond 2024 would always be an uphill battle,” Panthers Rugby League CEO Matt Cameron said.

“Making this decision now gives the club the opportunity to promote from within our full time squad.

“We thank Zac for his service to our club and wish him the best of luck with his future endeavours.”

BULLDOGS LOCK UP GUN PLAYMAKER

The Bulldogs’ future is looking bright after locking in up-and-coming playmaker Mitchell Woods until the end of 2027.

The club announced the signing on Monday afternoon, revealing the 17-year-old will join the Top 30 in 2025.

Woods, a local junior, captained the Bulldogs’ Harold Matthews team to a premiership last season and was named player of the match. He was won the club’s Harold Matthews Player of the Year award.

It’s a major coup for the Dogs given there was genuine interest in Woods from rival codes.

He was a Sydney Swans Academry member and was selected in the under 16s All-Australian team in 2022, while he was also selected in the Australian under 16s rugby union development squad.

While Woods is considered a future NRL player, Bulldogs general manager of football Phil Gould acknowledged the exciting teen still has a long journey ahead of him to get to first grade.

“Mitchell could have chosen any number of sporting codes to pursue a professional career, our game is lucky that Mitchell has chosen rugby league… the Bulldogs are both honoured and excited that Mitchell has chosen our club,” Gould said.

“He is obviously still young, and has a long way to go, we certainly won’t be rushing him but we won’t be holding him back either. I am extremely excited about his prospects.”

WAKEHAM SIGNS WITH MANLY FEEDER CLUB

Brandon Wakeham has signed with Manly’s New South Wales Cup feeder club Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles after failing to secure a new NRL deal.

Wakeham’s contract with the Wests Tigers expired last November. He was linked to the Super League but it was announced on Tuesday that the 24-year-old had signed with Blacktown Workers.

“When the opportunity came up to sign a quality half like Brandon, we didn’t hesitate to grab him,’’ Blacktown’s general manager of football Todd Darvall said.

“Brandon has played 40 NRL games through stints at Canterbury and the Wests Tigers. He has also represented Fiji in 10 Test matches.

“He will be a key asset in leading our Blacktown team around the field this season. His knowledge and leadership qualities will be invaluable.”

Wakeham’s signature boosts the Sea Eagles’ halves depth. While he is not in Manly’s Top 30, he is available for NRL selection from Round 11 onwards.

Elsehwere, the Wests Tigers have confirmed the signing of powerhouse centre Solomona Faataape.

It was first reported that the 23-year-old signed a train-and-trial contract, however the club announced on Monday that Faataape inked a one-year supplementary contract.

Faataape won the Queensland Cup premiership last season with Brisbane Tigers — a Melbourne Storm feeder side. He scored 16 tries, set up 10 and got 14 linebreaks in 21 games while averaging four tackle busts and 155 running metres per game.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Solomona and his family to the club and I’m excited for him,” Tigers coach Benji Marshall said.

“Solomona has a bundle of talent, he’s a good person, and it’s great to have him on board.

“I look forward to seeing him work extremely hard over the next phase of pre-season.”
